Merry Christmas!

We had a wonderful Christmas
full of laughter, love, and family.

But most of all,
we enjoyed celebrating
the birth of our Savior.

I love thinking about the humble circumstances
into which our Savior was born.
Since I have had children,
I can only imagine what it took
for Mary to travel to
Bethlehem, and deliver
her precious baby in a stable.

One phrase that has particularly
stuck out in my mind
is
Wise Men Still Seek Him.

That has become my goal for the new year.
To seek the Savior and
His guidance.
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas.

Fashionista

Watch out Coco Chanel...

Part of a fashionista's duties is to paint her own nails.
But not only does she paint her nails,
she likes to push the fashion limits by painting her skin as well.

Cowboy fashion now includes blue princess dresses,
Ugg Boots, and Barbie sunglasses.
And no girl's wardrobe is complete without a garbage sack romper.
Notice how it is stylishly placed over a light pink velvety sequined
ballerina costume. Also take a look at her runway face. Didn't you know
that all the runway models suck in their cheeks?

And no fashionista would be complete if she didn't give
out fashion advice. This girl told me the other day that
the shirt I was wearing was scary and she thought it was ugly.
Sheesh.

Ramblings

I feel like I just need a good ramble. I have so many things just running through my brain that it feels like it's going to explode if I don't get them out. So, this post is going to be sporadic and it's probably not going to make any sense, but that's the point in rambling right?

Today we had church. I absolutely love going to church. It's such a refresher and such a great reminder as to why I do the things I do. It uplifts me and makes me a better person. With that being said, church is hard with children. Those of you who have kids know what I'm talking about. And for those of you who are going to have children sometimes in the future, you will find out what I'm talking about.

Speaking of children... I just love my little girlies. They are so much fun! I love, love, love watching them interact with each other. They have this bond that makes my heart melt. They play screaming games where they just scream at each other. They are now at the point where they entertain each other. But they also cause a lot of mischief together... and that's ok. I can't help but laugh at some of the things they do. :) I have really struggled with being a mother. It's the hardest thing I've ever done. There are days when I feel like I am going to go clinically insane... but the good days far out way the bad days. Having two kids is hard. Really hard. Some days I don't want a third kid. Or a fourth kid. I'm perfectly content with two kids. But in my heart, I know there are more kidlets out there.

To be honest, I'm scared out of my mind to get pregnant again. My delivery and the past 16 months have been hell on my body. Toxemia is most common in the first pregnancy and if it's a boy pregnancy. Halle was neither. My OB said if I do want more kids, I need to have it within 6 years, because the risk of getting toxemia again is even higher. I get these horrendous headaches if I don't get enough sleep and for a long time my epidural sight was sore to the touch and would  ache all the time. Nate said it was because I was so swollen they had to practically jam it into my back and they had to do it a couple of times.  My next pregnancy I want to do a natural child birth . I am incredibly grateful to have had an epidural with Halle because I don't know if I would have had the energy to last through labor. She was a super small baby and was out within 15 seconds of pushing, so I'm pretty confident I can have a natural child birth. But whatever.

Going back to mothering. It has taught me a lot. I am a lot more patient (I know, if you think I'm impatient now, imagine what I was before I had kids!) I love that I get to stay home with them. I love just lounging around with them and taking them places. I was never meant to be a working mother. Maybe that's why I felt no desire to pursue a collegiate career. It's not what I wanted to do. Sure, I'm going to cosmetology school, but that's for fun. It'll be my fun money.

When I was single, I always wanted somebody who would allow me to be a stay at home mommy. I wanted that security of knowing I could be home with my kids. I know you're supposed to love somebody despite how much money they make, but I just really lucked out with Nate. In fact, I look at his list of accomplishments, and I'm continually amazed that he would want to be with somebody like me. I mean, he was Seminary Council President, served a great mission to Taiwan, learned Mandarin, and is now completing a Masters degree in Accounting. But not only that, he is kind and non judgemental, and he has an incredible amount of patience. He makes me laugh everyday and helps to lighten my grumpy moods. Uh, I have accomplished nothing. This past semester, I have had opportunities to meet some of his classmates, and I get really intimidated by the women in the Master's program. And the other day it hit me that Nate will be associated with this highly educated women on a daily basis.... So what does he see in me? I have no accomplishments to brag about. But obviously he sees something in me. And that makes me happy. Happy that he appreciates me for who I am and for the wife and mother that I am. It makes me happy that he doesn't need somebody with tons of college knowledge. And it's helping me to realize just how important my role as a mother is. I am shaping 2 little lives right now, and there are things that I have learned that couldn't be taught in school. I am an artist, a chef, a doctor, a taxi, an actor, a housekeeper, and a decorator. I'm also a translator. I translate what Ava says to other people. I am grateful that Nate has faith in me to be home everyday with our 2 yahoos and that he values what I do.

During our marriage, we've had an opportunity to have our roles reversed. I do work a couple of days a week, and during semester breaks, I pick up extra shifts because Nate's home with our girls. This has been good for the both of us. Good for me because I know what it'll be like when Nate works long days and he just wants to come home and play. I do my best to make sure that the house is clean, the kids are happy, and that dinner is on the table. It's also been good for him because now he knows what it's like to go grocery shopping with the kids, and how crazy life can get with you put a toddler and a baby in the mix and you have to get the laundry done, the bathroom cleaned, and the dishes done. We have come to appreciate each other's roles.

I know I should be grateful for a place to live, but I am getting sick of our apartment. Blah. Trying to cram 4 people into 600 square feet is really hard. And we're growing. Blah. We honestly have no where to put anything. Blah. I have decided to take pictures of our apartment so that when we have a house, and I start complaining about my house, all I have to do is pull out pictures of our apartments and remember what we used to live in.

Speaking of house.... these are my next major purchases when we have a house:
New vacuum.
Washer and dryer.
New TV and ET.
New kitchen table. A bigger one.
A bed for Ava.
A dishwasher (if it doesn't have one).

The past couple of months, I've had some medical issues. They can't really find out what's wrong with me, so for now, I really don't have feeling from head to toe. I feel things, but it's like a muted sensation. They said I am displaying classic symptoms of MS, but I don't have any lesions on my brain. That's not to say that something couldn't show up in the future... But let's just say I have witness quite a few tender mercies from the  Lord. Did you know that IHC has a financial assistance program? We qualified. We've had to pay some of the bill, but it's next to nothing. I am grateful for modern technology and for doctors and nurses. I hate the stupid health care bill and for what it's going to do to the quality of health care. I have honestly received top notch health care from people who are genuinely concerned. I went into the ER because when I first experienced my numbness, they thought I was having a mini stroke. I walked right in to the ER and I was treated BEFORE they asked me my insurance info. I waited for 5 minutes in the waiting room. Stupid health care bill. Blah.

Nate graduates in one more semester. That's it! But he doesn't have a job. We might be looking into moving to Texas. I would be down with that. I would love to live outside of Utah. Now, I have this thing where I make plans about our future, even though nothing is set in stone. I all ready have checked out cosmetology schools and houses and jobs in Texas. I know exactly how much we need for a down payment on a house.

It scares me that Nate doesn't have a job. I know he is capable of getting one, and that he'll exceed in wherever he goes. A couple of months ago, he interview with a firm in SLC and it was like a match made in heaven. He didn't get the job. We were devastated. And it was one of those things that we had prayed that Heavenly Father's will be done, and when it was done, we didn't agree with it. But we have picked ourselves up and our lives are completely in His hands. I will go wherever He wants us to go (Texas, maybe?) and I will support my husband in whatever he does. My faith was tested, and I have spent a lot of time on my knees pleading to Heavenly Father as to where He wants us. I still don't know where we are supposed to go, but I know that we will be provided for.

Tithing works. I have a firm testimony of that. We have been taken care of the past 5 years because we pay our tithing. I know that.

I really dislike panhandlers. They drive me crazy. Want to know what else drives me crazy? When people don't wear deodorant.

I love driving out to work on Saturday mornings. The sunrise across the valley is just beautiful.  I also love it when I see people out jogging while I'm driving. As I drive past them, I smile and think "Good for you!". I love sleeping in. I'm never fully awake before 8:30 a.m.

I bite my nails. I've bitten them for as long as I can remember. I hate it, and I stop for a couple of months, but then I just start biting them again.

I shower every other day. Nate thinks it's disgusting, but I just don't feel like doing my hair every day.

I love it when Halle says, "Baby!" when she sees her doll. I love it when babies say baby.

Well, it's late friends. I have to get up early because I've got Christmas to prepare for this whole week. I love this time of year, but I'm sad that Christmas is so commercialized. People seem to have forgotten why we celebrate Christmas. I am grateful for Christ's birth. I have thought a lot about what it meant for Mary to travel to Bethlehem when she was so pregnant and then to have to deliver her baby in the stable. And I've thought about what it truly meant to have the Savior of the world lying in a manger. So humble.

Merry Christmas.

TST

Every night, we read 3 books
and sing 3 songs.
Why?
Because Ava's 3.
The other night,
we were getting ready to sing our last
song for the night, and we had
the following conversation.
Me: Ok Ava, what's the last song you want to sing?
Ava: The TST song.
Me: Uh, I don't know that song. Why don't you sing it for me?
Ava: I don't know it either.

Ok then. She did go on and sing the TST song.
It was about 4 minutes long and
consisted of a bunch of made up words.

Prayer

This little girl is so special.
She has such a playful side,

but there are times when I feel her spirit
so strongly.

She has these moments
where she will stop everything she's doing
and just look up.

And sometimes we go through our house
and look at all the pictures
and when we come to one with Jesus,
she knows exactly who He is
and will point Him out and smile.

She knows when it's time to pray,
and there have been a couple of times
where we've forgotten to say the
prayer before we eat,
and she'll quietly fold her arms and look at us.

I'm so grateful for her and the spirit she brings into our home.
She amazes me everday with how
strong she is.
I couldn't imagine life without her.

A Breath of Fresh Air

So, this past month has pretty much been the pits.
We have had a few disappointments that have been
extremely hard to get through...
We're both on eggshells most of the time,
probably because we're cramming 4 people
into a 600 square foot apartment.
And because the whole student=being extremely poor thing
is getting old.
Sooooooo...
Needless to say, we needed a breath of fresh air.
And Wednesday, we got it.

Nate met the Xu (pronounced SHOE) family on his mission.
In fact, he gave them the discussions.
And they decided to come to America
for a couple of weeks.

I was really nervous meeting them,
probably because I don't speak a lick of Chinese.

We went to South Towne Mall and had lunch there.
We all rode the carousel and they had corn dogs.
We came back to our apartment
where they showered us with gifts!
We went outside and they played in the snow.
Later that night, we went to Park City and ate
at Bangkok Thai on Main.
I met one of Nate's old mission companions and his wifey.
Then on Saturday, the mom and dad, Nate, and his old companion
all went to the temple. I met them afterwards
and we ate at Tucano's.

Even though we couldn't really communicate
with each other, I could tell that these were special people.

And, I was just so proud of Nate.
Proud because he decided to serve a mission.
Proud because he learned Mandarin.
Proud because he has maintained contact with the Xu's.
They weren't just another baptism to him.
He really cares about them.
His mission is a whole different world
that I've known about, but I couldn't really understand.
I couldn't understand why he would get so excited
when he would talk about these families he met.
And when we met the Xu family, I understood.

These past few days have just really made me
stop and think about what life is really about.

Is it really about getting that dream job?
Is it really about having lots and lots of money?
Is it really about making sure your
house is clean every minute of the day?
Is it really about feeling pity for yourself because
you're apartment is too small, and your clothes aren't
exactly up to date?
Or...
Is it about the way you treat people?
Is it about knowing there is a Father in Heaven who loves you?
Is it about living the best you can so you can be with your family forever?
Is it about serving others?
Is it about loving your children and showing that love?
Is it about putting your faith in the Lord and letting
Him take all these wordly burdens off your shoulders?

I think you get the idea...
I'm so grateful to have met them.
They were truly a breath of fresh air.

She's Three!

Little Miss Ava turned three on the 19th.
Eek.
She's such a little sass-a-frass.

We started the day off by going to Gardner Village to
see all the Bootiful witches.

Ava tried to be scary, and this is what she ended up with...

Since January, she's been asking
about a "Princess and the Frog" cake...

And she got the dress to go along with the cake.

Happy Birthday Ava!

Where has the past 3 years gone?
I still remember when she was like this...

I can't believe in another 3 years,
 and she'll be in kindergarten.
Double Eek.

Busy, Busy, BUSY!!!

This past week has been insane, to say the least.
Besides working, having midterms, and our RA responsibilities,
did some light travelling.
It was Nate's fall break,
so we headed up to Logan for my cousin-in-law's bridal shower.
We then drove to Boise to see my brothers.
We drove back home the next day.
We went to the pumpkin patch for the first time
ever!
Here are some pics, so you'd better enjoy...

If you look closely, you can see a crack. It makes me smile. :)

It was my first time ever to a pumpkin patch.
It was hard work trying to pick out a perfect pumpkin!

We went with the Smith family.
We don't really like to smile. Ha!

It seems like Nels is always tagging along.
That's ok, because he entertained my girls
for 5 1/2 hours.
This is how they had to sit the whole time.
Such troopers!

 Dan just loves little Halle!
He loves to make her giggle.

Ava's in that stage where she makes
funny faces for every picture.

We ate at this little place that was on
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

Awww... aren't we just the cutest?

This is the little Drive-In we at ate.
It was totally retro and had the best burgers
ever!! It made the whole trip.

It's home of the Ice Cream Potato.
I tried one, and it was delicious!

I ordered the BBQ Bacon Burger. It was heaven!
The fries were seasoned to perfection. Mmmm...
And here is the Ice Cream Potato.
Wanna know a secret?
It's just vanilla ice cream shaped like a potato.
Then you roll the ice cream in cocoa.
Cut it down the middle and
put some whipped cream and toppings on it.

I can't wait to make one!

Grateful for the Gospel

I was able to hear President Packer's talk during General Conference, and as some of you know, it's caused quite a heated debate over the issue of homosexuality. I have been thinking a lot about his remarks. And by a lot, I really mean, A LOT. But I have to tell you, my testimony has been greatly strengthened.
I know that Heavenly Father is no respecter of persons. He gives us modern revelation and it comes through His servants. Although some of that revelation may be quite unpopular, it is the truth. Our church leaders aren't out to get the popular vote, or to say what people want to hear. Viewpoints and doctrine don't change just because people protest. This isn't politics. God's plan is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man, and homosexuality completely frustrates that plan.
I am grateful for the boldness in which our leaders speak the truth. Sometimes the truth is hard to hear, but it's necessary. I am grateful for a talk that Elder Holland wrote in the Ensign a couple of years ago, {Click here to read it.} because t really clarified a lot of things for me. I do feel bad that people openly bully and are mean to those who are gay/lesbians. I don't think it's right to make fun of them or to persecute them, but I don't agree with what they do. It's just like I don't agree with people shacking up. {That's Dr. Laura's term. It means that people live together or have sex together outside marriage.}It's immoral and wrong, but I'm not mean to people who do it.  Lots of people shack up, and it's common practice today. In fact, most people think it's weird to wait until marriage to have sex. And although society's viewpoint on sex outside of marriage has changed, the church's viewpoint has not changed.
I am grateful for the Atonement.  If you've shacked up, you can repent and be clean. If you're struggling with homosexuality, you can go see your Bishop. The beauty of the Atonement is that it not only cleanses, but it encompasses or struggles and our battles. I know our Savior is there for each of us. He does know our struggles, even if that struggle is being gay. He still loves us, but we need to submit our will to His will and we need to make our desires what He wants us to desire. When we do this, we will be blessed and comforted.
I know our leaders are called of God. They are inspired to lead and guide us in such tumultuous times. I am especially grateful for this past General Conference and I know with everything in me that I belong to the true church.

Accomplished

Ok, so remember that thing
that I was practically undestined to accomplish?
After many, many obstacles,
I accomplished it.
It took me 3 days of preparation.
I worked my little guts off til about
1:00 in the morning for 3 nights.
I spent countless hours on Google,
and read hundreds of blogs.
And here was the end result...

I was asked to make this cake by one of the girls that used to my in my Young Women group. She is turning 16 and sent me a design of the cake she wanted. I had never done a multi-tiered cake, and I've never done a fondant cake.

After making 5 batches of frosting, 9 batches of fondant, and a total 6 cakes, I learned tons of new things. But I also learned something about myself.

Sometimes, I don't see the end result in things. I get flustered and irrational in the moment. I need to step back, take a break, remember why I'm doing things, and focus on what my goal is. And let me tell you, seeing the look on that girl's face was worth every moment of feeling frustrated and "undestined" while making this cake.

I am extremely proud of my accomplishment.

Undestined...

Have you ever felt
that you were not destined
to do something?

Have you ever tried
to accomplish something,
only to have almost everything
go horribly wrong?

And you lose tons of sleep
over this one thing?

And no matter how much
you plan, you wonder
"How in the heck
will I pull this one off?"

Yeah, me too.

Eastern Idaho State Fair

My cousins and I decided to go up to the Idaho State Fair this year. It's held in Blackfoot, ID which just so happens to be where my mother is from. Nate couldn't come, so I was brave and drove up by myself. Ok, I wasn't really by myself because I conned my little bro into coming, but I've never driven 3 hours one way with 2 kids in the car. They actually did really well. Nelson really was a big help. I haven't been feeling the greatest the past few weeks and I have been having a hard time holding Halle, so Nels was constantly holding her and pushing the stroller for me.

We had tons of fair food (I skipped my diet for a day. Who can resist fair food?) We ate Tiger's Ears which is fried bread smothered with cinnamon and sugar. MMMmmmm.....

And I had a Grizzly Burger. What's a Grizzly Burger, you ask? Just look at the pic below. It did not disappoint.

Ava felt the urge to do some gymnastics during lunch. She was so cute, I just had to get a picture. She seriously stayed here for 5 min.

My grandma and grandpa came to the fair with us. I loved watching Ava and Halle interact with them.

We saw the cows. Nelson didn't like the smell at all, and kept his nose plugged the whole time we were inside, but I loved watching everyone get their cows ready to show. They bring the cows over to a station and they blow dry them off and they spike the hair on the back and they even spray paint them. I called it "Cow Cosmetology". It was really intriguing.

Ava was too keen on turing her back to the cow why I took the picture. Hence the look on her face.
We tried on cowboy hats.

And I just love getting caricature's of my kids. I just adore this picture. I love the eyes because I think the artist really captured the look that Halle gives.

And the real reason we went to the fair was to see the races. We spent 4 hours just watching the horses race. (There was tons of down time in between.) I can't even begin to describe the excitement that goes on during the races. You just have to be there. My grandpa was tickled pink when Ava went and started talking to him. I just love this pic.

And of course, we put a little money on one of the races. We each pitched in $2 and picked what horse we thought would win. Nelson ended up winning a whopping $7 total (my grandma only pitched in $1). He was pretty happy.... I just hope this doesn't start some sort of gambling addiction. :)

This is the end of the Indian Relay Races. Those are by far the best to watch because they ride bareback! It's just amazing to watch them fly on and off the horses in just a split second. They have nothing to grab onto except the horses' mane. This is the winning team. They won a whopping $35,000! Now that's a nice chunk of change.

We had so much fun going and we'll definitely be going back next year. I drove back that same night, and was simply exhausted, but it was sure worth it.

3rd Time's the Charm

I love, love, love, love, love, love, LOVE going to concerts!!!
There's just something about seeing musicians perform live that makes my blood go crazy! Here's a quick run down of the concerts I've been to....
Dixie Chicks
SheDaisy
Air Supply
Peter Brienholt/Ryan Shupe
John Schmidt
Keith Urban (twice)
Matchbox 20/Alanis Morisette
Stix/Def Leppard
Celine Dion

AND

Mr. Mayer. John Mayer that is. I have been to him 3 times.
The first time was in 2004 when he toured with Maroon 5.
Then in 2008 he toured with Brett Dennan and Colbie Caillat
and then I went this past week!!
He is such an amazing artist
and I go CUH.RAY.ZEE. at his concerts
. I tend to scream insane things (we won't go there....).
I just love the way he works the audience
and how he performs the songs we all know and love,
but they're completely different because he goes off and just jams.
He also gives a lot of credit to his band
and lets them have solos in turn.
Needless to say, I live it up!! So, here are some pics.
I actually didn't take a lot because
I didn't want to be too worried about the pictures I was taking.
I just wanted to enjoy the concert!

Me and Andrea. She's one of my best friends.

Lead singer for Owl City

One thing I loved were the stringed instruments. I guess I am a little partial. :) But these 2 chicks just jammed and when they weren't playing, the got up and danced. I'm pretty sure they were 2 of the coolest girls ever!

Ahh.... what a magical site to behold.

I love that he always talks to the audience.
